Bryson City, North Carolina
is the county seat for Swain County in the Great Smoky Mountains of western North Carolina. Tourism is the main industry in this small town of only 1200 residents. Rural in nature, Bryson City has lots of amenities found in larger cities due to the large number of tourist who descend on the town in the summertime. Approximately half of the county’s employment comes from government agencies and the other half from the private sector, with accommodations and food services, retail and public administration being the highest. The other income in town comes from health care and social assistance, schools, construction and manufacturing. Eighty-six percent of Swain County is federal land with forty percent of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park inside its borders.
